2 cups of milk a day ideal for childrens health new research shows
New research has answered one of the most common questions parents ask their doctors: How much milk should I be giving my children? The answer is two cups per day.
"We started to research the question because professional recommendations around milk intake were unclear and doctors and parents were seeking answers," said Dr. Jonathon Maguire, a paediatrician at St. Michaels Hospital and the lead author of the study.
Dr. Maguire and his team looked at how cows milk affected body stores of iron and vitamin D – two of the most important nutrients in milk – in more than 1,300 children aged two to five years.
The results of the study appeared online in Pediatrics today.
They found that children who drank more cows milk had higher Vitamin D stores but lower iron stores.
"We saw that two cups of cows milk per day was enough to maintain adequate vitamin D levels for most children, while also maintaining iron stores. With additional cows milk, there was a further reduction in iron stores without greater benefit from vitamin D," Dr. Maguire said.
The researchers recruited healthy children during routine doctors appointments between 2008 and 2010. Parents were asked to fill out an extensive questionnaire about their childrens milk drinking habits and other factors that could affect iron and Vitamin D stores. A blood sample was obtained from each child to determine body stores of iron and Vitamin D.
The children were participating in TARGet Kids!, a unique collaboration between childrens doctors and researchers from St. Michaels Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children. The program follows children from birth with the aim of understanding and preventing common nutrition problems in the early years and their impact on health and disease later in life.
The study also suggested that children with darker skin pigmentation may not have enough vitamin D stores during the winter months. Dr. Maguire suggested that instead of consuming more milk to increase these levels, wintertime vitamin D supplementation may be a more appropriate way of increasing vitamin D stores while preserving iron stores.
"Vitamin D deficiency in children has been linked to bone health issues and iron deficiency has been linked to anemia and delays in cognitive development," Dr. Maguire said. "Being able to answer parents questions about healthy cows milk intake is important to avoiding these potentially serious complications of low vitamin D and iron stores."

The 25 Food Project Day 5
I’m attempting to feed my 6-foot, 205-pound fiancĂ© for one week for $25. This is our story.
I suddenly understand why Ma fed me PB&J sandwiches from kindergarten clear through junior high. Because Day 5, my friends? Was brought to you by peanut butter.
We cleared the 2600 minimum by more than 200 calories, thanks to six tablespoons of Jif Extra Crunchy spread among various dishes. (Er, plus an enormous brunch - picture to the right.) The Husband-Elect loves him some peanut butter, especially on banana bread, so he didn’t mind one bit. He does mind the lack of grazing. “I feel good,” he says, “but I miss the simple pleasures of snacks and random eating.” When we started this, I didn’t realize how often we take food when we want it, as opposed to when we’re allowed. Now, I have a lot more sympathy for people who don’t have that option.
There are two more days to go, but this is already an eye-opening experience. Looking forward to sharing with yis all on Wednesday.
In the meantime, have a lovely night, and here are Sunday’s numbers.

I’m so excited for the great information and prizes I get to share in the next 7 weeks!
Yep, you read that right, 7 weeks! Can you do it?
At the request of several of my readers, and to make your transition easier than mine was, I have put together a 40-day challenge to offer you support, recipes and giveaways! If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to try going grain free or ditching the sugar, now is your chance.
Please join me for Lent, or just for 40 days, to try living grain free. Your health will thank you, and if you don’t like it, you can always go back to the old way of eating. What have you got to lose?
To help make the transition easier and to make sure we address all aspects of health, I’ve broken the challenge into Seven Mini Challenges. Each week, there will be a new challenge with specific goals, support and prizes!
Start A Wellness Journal!
Maybe your goal is to lose weight, maybe to sleep better or make improvements in your families diet. Whatever the goal, keeping a journal will help you both with accountability and support! Consider starting a Wellness Journal .If you want to lose weight, post your measurements and *gasp* a picture if you want, if you are trying to clear up your skin, take a picture to document your progress. If you’re trying to improve your family’s health, show us their beautiful faces!
This is my favorite part of the Challenge personally, since I feel like I really get to “meet” you all.
And the Week One Mini Challenge Is…
Getting a solid nutritional foundation in place! Anyone surprised? Many of you may already be solid in this area, but I know that this is a huge struggle for many people! If you’re diet is already iron-clad, please offer some advice and encouragement for those who are struggling to make the change. This challenge will actually go a little longer than a week so that everyone has time to make the changes, and so we can get on a Monday-Friday schedule…
Nutrition Basics
Nutrition can have a tremendous impact on overall health and will be a large part of the focus of the challenge. If you’ve been a Wellness Mama reader for a while, you know that I’m not a fan of grains, sugars and starches and recommend removing them from your diet. Of course, only if you are making sure to get adequate nutrition from proteins, fats and vegetables. Some foods, like beans, are of questionable nature, so for the duration of the challenge, I’d suggest removing them too! Others, like vegetable oils, margarine, and other frankenfats are toxic and should be avoided completely, challenge or not!
Mini Challenge #1Everyone is entering the challenge for different reasons, but if one of your goals is to lose weight or improve your physique, consider drastically reducing your carbohydrate intake.
Cut out the grains, sugars, potatoes, beans and all processed foods from your diet and focus on getting maximum nutrition from meats, vegetables, healthy fats (coconut, olives, coconut oil, olive oil, tallow, lard, butter, unprocessed cream, etc) and fruits.
If weight loss is a serious goal, this will mean that that morning bowl of oatmeal or potato salad at lunch is out. To keep it simple, just get your carbs from vegetables (minus potatoes) and you’ll be fine! One exception, if you struggle from low-thyroid, don’t drop your carbs too low for too long, as this can stress the thyroid, just make sure to get your carbs from healthy foods like sweet potatoes, winter squash, fruit, and grain-free baked goods!
[Note: Some people experience a "carb flu" as their body adjusts to not having a constantly available stream of glucose. This is temporary, but can be uncomfortable for the first couple of weeks. Check out these two posts by Dr. Michael Eades to help make the transition easier
Tips for Starting Low Carb Part I and Tips for Starting Low Carb Part II ]
We’ll be addressing some specifics that can help with your individual goals in the next few weeks (supplements, what type of exercise, etc) but nutrition is the single most important factor and all the other factor’s can’t fix a poor diet!

Whereas, The fruit is complementary food that have to eat for getting enough fiber and other vitamin every day. Accord to nutrient expert, Emila E. Research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that the fruit needs in the human body is constantly rising. In the 1989-2000 years ago, the USDA recommends eating three to five fruits per day, so that the fiber needs met. However, over the time, circumstances, and conditions of the environment, the needs of the fruit in a day is increasing.

In addition, the fruit is also not directly consumed at one time, but tucked in between large meals, as a snack. Thus, you are not bored or too full from eating the fruit.

2. Make Stomach Satiety Feels
Because of the high fiber content, eating apples will make your stomach feel full for longer without having to take too many calories. Thats because fiber takes longer to digest and apple body has a tough indigestible fiber complex. It is recommended to consume at least 25-40 grams of fiber per day.
3. Keeping Body Stay Slim

In addition, the skin of the apple also contains a substance called ursolic acid that is believed to reduce the risk of obesity when tested on mice.
