Resveratrol Reduces Breast Cancer Risk by Blocking the Effect of Estrogen


Researchers from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Calabria in Italy publishing in The FASEB Journal report that resveratrol blocks the effect of estrogen and can help to prevent the malignant growth of breast cancer in women. The grape/red wine derivative has been the subject of numerous scientific studies in recent years and has shown promise in lowering risks from cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia.

Scientists also believe the protective nutrient may extend healthy lifespan by directly influencing mortality genes known as SIRT. Italian researchers noted "Resveratrol is a potential pharmacological tool to be exploited when breast cancer become resistant to the hormonal therapy." Health-minded adults will want to include resveratrol from natural food sources or supplementation to reap the numerous health benefits.

Resveratrol Supplementation Suppresses the Growth of Malignant Breast Cancer Cells
To design their study, researchers used several breast cancer cell lines expressing the estrogen receptor to test the effects of resveratrol. They exposed the different cells to a solution containing resveratrol and compared the results to cells left untreated. They found an important reduction in cell growth in cells treated with resveratrol, while no changes were seen in untreated cells. Further experiments determined that this effect was caused by a critical reduction in estrogen receptors caused by the administration of resveratrol.

This finding is the first of its kind as it relates specifically to the effect of resveratrolon a particular cancer cell line. The team was able to conclude that resveratrol is able to counteract the malignant progression of breast cancer cells by inhibiting the growth and spread of hormone resistant cancerous cells. This has important implications for the treatment of women with breast cancer whose tumors eventually develop resistance to hormonal therapy.

Resveratrol Specifically Targets Cancerous Cells to Fight Breast Cancer
Lead researcher Dr. Sebastiano Ando noted "Resveratrol is a potential pharmacological tool to be exploited when breast cancer become resistant to the hormonal therapy." A peer review board examining the study data concluded “scientists havent finished distilling the secrets of good health that have been hidden in natural products such as red wine.” It is important to note that in this body of research, resveratrol only demonstrated an effect on malignant cancer cells and exerted no effect on non-cancerous cells.

While the authors cautioned that people should not go out and start using red wine or resveratrol supplements as a treatment for breast cancer, the finding strongly indicates that the plant-protective compound should be considered as a component in an overall plan designed to prevent the devastating disease. Nutrition experts recommend a supplemental intake (from a purified, organically derived source) of between 50 and 250 mg per day for optimal health benefits.

Increased Dietary Fiber Consumption Dramatically Lowers Risk of First Stroke Event

Incidence of stroke in the US and western cultures continues to grow at a staggering rate as it takes the lives of nearly 150,000 Americans each year, making this debilitating illness the fourth leading cause of preventable death. Closely aligned with heart disease and other vascular disorders, stroke is the result of several key modifiable lifestyle factors including smoking, lack of regular exercise and poor dietary choices that promote arterial hardening and blood clots that circulate until they reach a narrowed artery, wreaking permanent disability or death.

Dietary Fiber Improves Blood Lipids and Removes Excess Fats to Lower Stroke Risk
A research team from the University of Leeds in the UK has published the result of a study in the American Heart Association journal, Stroke that explains how taking steps to include more fiber in your diet could help to protect you from suffering a stroke. The study team leader, Dr. Diane Threapelton noted “Most people do not get the recommended level of fiber, and increasing fiber may contribute to lower risk for strokes… we must educate consumers on the continued importance of increasing fiber intake and help them learn how to increase fiber in their diet.

The recommended daily intake for fiber is currently set at 25 grams, yet most people eat less than 10 grams due to the high number of calories consumed from an increasingly ined diet. Food processing removes most nutrients and fiber from foods, while fortifying with added sugars, fats and flavorings to prompt immediate taste satisfaction. Dietary fiber (soluble and insoluble) comes from plants, a critical food source that is grossly lacking in many western diets.

Dramatically Lower Stroke Risk by Including Ten Daily Servings of Fiber
Scientists focused on eight large-scale studies published over a 22 years span that assessed the impact of diet on both ischemic (caused by a blood clot) and hemorrhagic (caused by blood vessel leakage) stroke. After adjusting for risk variables such as smoking and age, the researchers found that for every seven gram increase in fiber consumed daily, risk of first time stroke goes down by seven percent. You would need to consume 6 to 8 servings of grains and 8 to 10 servings of vegetables and fruits daily to yield 25 grams of fiber.


Dr. Threapelton concludedGreater intake of fiber-rich foods such as whole-grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts are important for everyone, and especially for those with stroke risk factors like being overweight, smoking and having high blood pressure. Top sources for dietary fiber include nuts and seeds, legumes, oats, the pulp of some fruits, broccoli and carrots. Eliminating ined convenience foods will allow you to incorporate sufficient fiber from natural sources to significantly lower the risk for a first stroke event.

Exercise Lowers Risk Of Lung And Colorectal Cancer Among Middle Aged Men



New research conducted by researchers at the University of Vermont reveals that middle-aged men who engage in a lot of cardiovascular exercise are at a reduced risk of suffering from lung and colorectal cancer. In addition, those who exercise are less likely to die from prostate cancer (although their risk of contracting the disease remained the same).

According to the lead author of the study, Susan Lakoski, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Vermont: "While poor fitness is already known to predict future cardiovascular disease, this is the first study to explore fitness as a marker of future cancer risk prognosis.

This finding makes it clear that patients should be advised that they need to achieve a certain fitness level, and not just be told that they need to exercise. And unlike exercise behavior, which relies on patient self-reporting, fitness can be objectively and accurately measured in a clinical setting."

A total of 17,049 men participated in the study. They each received a cardiovascular fitness assessment from the Cooper Institute at a median age of 50. The test involved walking on a treadmill with a variation of different speeds and elevations. They recorded the mens performance with the ratio of metabolic rate (the rate of energy consumption), known as metabolic equivalents or METs.

The team divided the participants into different groups based on their level of fitness. The researchers then analyzed their medical histories to determine whether they had developed either lung, colorectal, or prostate cancer.

In this study, men who were in their 40s who achieved 13.5 minutes in the fitness test belonged to the lowest quintile for fitness as well as men in their 50s who achieved less than 11 minutes.

During the follow-up period of 20 to 25 years, a total of 2,332 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, 277 were diagnosed with lung cancer and 276 were diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

They adjusted the results of the study for factors such as BMI, smoking habits and age.

The risk of lung or colorectal cancer decreased by 68 and 38 percent among men who were the most physically fit and active compared to those who were not active at all.

The researchers found that physical activity did not have any effect on the rate of prostate cancer diagnosis.

Although its been shown that exercise can reduce the risk of dying from prostate cancer. Previous research has indicated that men with prostate cancer who exercise vigorously have a notably reduced risk of dying from the disease compared to other diagnosed men.

Men who were physically fit at the time they developed cancer had a much higher survival rate and lower risk of dying from the cancers compared to men who were not fit. In fact, a 1MET increase in fitness was associated with a 14 percent reduced risk of dying from the cancer, as well as a 23 percent reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

In addition, the researchers noted that patients who werent fit yet not obese were still at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), suggesting that people should be aware that fitness also impacts risk.

Exercise has been shown to have huge beneficial effects on people diagnosed with cancer and its also been found to help minimize the risk recurrence, or another cancer developing.

Exercise may reduce the risk of epilepsy later in life for men


New research suggests that men who exercise vigorously as young adults may reduce their risk of developing epilepsy later in life. The study is published in the September 4, 2013, online issue of Neurology®, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. Epilepsy is a brain disease that causes repeated seizures over time.

"There are a host of ways exercise has been shown to benefit the brain and reduce the risk of brain diseases," said study author Elinor Ben-Menachem, PhD, MD, with the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and an associate member of the American Academy of Neurology. "This is the first study in humans to show that exercise may also reduce the risk of epilepsy, which can be disabling and life-threatening."

For the study, 1.17 million Swedish men were given cycle tests that measured cardiovascular fitness when they enlisted for mandatory military service at age 18. The participants were then assessed for epilepsy for an average of 25 years. During follow-up, 6,796 men were diagnosed with epilepsy.

The study found that men who had a high level of fitness were 79 percent less likely to develop epilepsy than those with low fitness levels and 36 percent less likely to develop epilepsy than those with medium fitness levels.

The proportion of men with high fitness who developed epilepsy in the study was 0.48% (2,381 out of 496,973 with high fitness). The proportion of men with medium fitness who developed epilepsy was 0.62 percent (3,913 out of 629,876 with medium fitness). The proportion of men with low fitness who developed epilepsy was 1.09 percent (502 out of 46,230 with low fitness).

The results were lessened only slightly after considering genetic factors and a prior history of traumatic brain injury, stroke or diabetes.

"Exercise may affect epilepsy risk in two ways. It may protect the brain and create stronger brain reserve, or it may simply be that people who are fit early in life tend to also be fit later in life, which in turn affects disease risk," Ben-Menachem said.

Increasing Red Meat Consumption Increases Risk For Type 2 Diabetes In 3 Large Cohorts

Following the theme of yesterdays post, Large Prospective Study Supports Link Between Meat Consumption And Diabetes, below is a study from this summer which found that increasing the amount of red meat eaten - by just a half serving or a few ounces a day - increases the risk for type 2 diabetes:

Changes in Red Meat Consumption and Subsequent Risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Three Cohorts of US Men and Women, JAMA Internal Medicine, July 2013

Researchers followed 149,143 participants of 3 Harvard-based prospective cohorts - the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, the Nurses’ Health Study, and the Nurses’ Health Study II. After adjustment (for age, family history, race, marital status, initial red meat consumption, smoking status, physical activity, alcohol intake, total energy intake, and diet quality), they found that:
"Increasing red meat intake during a 4-year interval was associated with an elevated risk of [type 2 diabetes] during the subsequent 4 years in each cohort."

"Increasing red meat intake of more than 0.50 servings per day was associated with a 48% elevated risk [of type 2 diabetes] in the subsequent 4-year period.

"Reducing red meat consumption by more than 0.50 servings per day from baseline to the first 4 years of follow-up was associated with a 14% lower risk during the subsequent entire follow-up."
They concluded:
"Our results confirm the robustness of the association between red meat and [type 2 diabetes] and add further evidence that limiting red meat consumption over time confers benefits for [type 2 diabetes] prevention."
People change their eating behavior over time. Studies that measure food intake at one point in time, usually at baseline or the beginning of a study, fail to account for these changes. In these 3 cohorts, diet was updated every 4 years.

Bedtime aspirin may reduce risk of morning heart attack


Taking aspirin at bedtime instead of in the morning might reduce acute heart events, according a new study presented at the American Heart Associations Scientific Sessions 2013.

Low-dose daily aspirin is recommended for people at high risk of heart disease and for reducing the risk of recurrent heart events. Aspirin thins the blood and makes it less likely to clot. The tendency for platelet activity to be higher peaks in the morning.

The Aspirin in Reduction of Tension II trial is the first study to explore the timing of aspirin intake among cardiovascular disease patients. In the randomized, open-label study, 290 patients took either 100 mg of aspirin upon waking or at bedtime during two 3-month periods. At the end of each period, blood pressure and platelet activity was measured.

Blood pressure was not reduced; however, bedtime aspirin platelet activity was reduced by 22 units (aspirin reaction units).

"Because higher platelet activity contributes to a higher risk of acute heart events, this simple intervention – switching aspirin intake from morning to bedtime – could be beneficial for the millions of patients with heart disease who take aspirin on a daily basis," said Tobias Bonten, M.D., Ph.D student at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands.

PCB Exposure May Increase Risk For Diabetes

In light of the recent contamination of pork in Ireland (On Saturday, Ireland recalled all pork products because they were contaminated with high levels of PCBs. PCBs are polychlorinated biphenyls, highly toxic petroleum products. Yesterday, the Irish government reported that cattle were also testing positive for dioxins), I bring the unfortunate news that exposure to PBCs can increase the risk for diabetes.

In 1978-1979, people in central Taiwan were poisoned by PCB-contaminated rice bran oil that they used for cooking. Between 1993 and 2003, researchers in Taiwan investigated the incidence of type 2 diabetes in these Yucheng ("oil disease") victims.

When compared to non-poisoned controls, women who were exposed to the dioxin-laced oil were twice as likely to have developed diabetes in the ensuing 24 years.

For women whose PCB exposure was greatest (as evidenced by the presence of chloracne - an acne-like skin disorder caused by exposure to toxic chlorinated chemicals), diabetes risk was five and a half times that of matched controls (hypertension risk was 3.5 times that of matched controls).

Men exposed to dioxin also experienced an increased risk for diabetes but it was not significant. The researchers speculated that "women tend to have a greater fat percentage than men, which might result in a longer half-life of these lipophilic compounds."

One of the studys authors, Dr. Yueliang Leon Guo, commented to Reuters Health on the implications of their findings:
"Guo said that since "everyone" has detectable PCB levels in his or her body, its possible that exposure to such pollutants has helped feed the widespread rise in diabetes in recent decades."
The authors advised:
"When planning treatments against diabetes, the body burden of PCBs and dioxins should be caully considered, especially for women."

Increasing Muscle Mass May Improve Insulin Resistance And Lower Risk For Diabetes

Is it possible to improve insulin sensitivity and stave off a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes by increasing muscle mass?

Yes, according to this study:

Relative Muscle Mass Is Inversely Associated With Insulin Resistance And Prediabetes. Findings From The Third National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, September, 2011

Analysis of data from 13,644 participants of NHANES III revealed:

In people with diabetes, each 10% increase in skeletal muscle index (SMI: the ratio of total skeletal muscle mass, estimated by bioelectrical impedance, to total body weight) was associated with:
  • 11% reduction in insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)
  • 12% reduction in prediabetes prevalence
Reductions were higher in people without diabetes.

Study author Dr. Preethi Srikanthan, an assistant professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology at UCLA, said in a press release:
"Our findings suggest that beyond focusing on losing weight to improve metabolic health, there may be a role for maintaining fitness and building muscle mass. This is a welcome message for many overweight patients who experience difficulty in achieving weight loss, as any effort to get moving and keep fit should be seen as laudable and contributing to metabolic change."

High supplemental calcium intake may increase risk of cardiovascular disease death in men



A high intake of supplemental calcium appears to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) death in men but not in women in a study of more 388,000 participants between the ages of 50 and 71 years, according to a report published Online First by JAMA Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Calcium supplementation has become widely used, especially among the elderly population, because of its proposed bone health benefits. However, beyond calciums established role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, its health effect on nonskeletal outcomes, including cardiovascular health, remains largely unknown and has become "increasingly contentious," the authors write in the study background.

Qian Xiao, Ph.D., of the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Md., and colleagues examined whether the intake of dietary and supplemental calcium was associated with mortality from total CVD, heart disease and cerebrovascular diseases. The study participants were 388,229 men and women ages 50 to 71 years from the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study in six states and two metropolitan areas from 1995 through 1996.

"In this large, prospective study we found that supplemental but not dietary calcium intake was associated with an increased CVD mortality in men but not in women," the authors conclude.

During an average 12 years of follow-up, 7,904 CVD deaths in men and 3,874 CVD deaths in women were identified and supplements containing calcium were used by 51 percent of men and 70 percent of women. Compared with non-supplement users, men with an intake of supplemental calcium of more than 1,000 mg/day had an increased risk of total CVD death (risk ratio [RR], 1.20), more specifically with heart disease (RR, 1.19), but not significantly with cerebrovascular disease death (RR, 1.14).

For women, supplemental calcium intake was not associated with CVD death, heart disease death or cerebrovascular disease death. Dietary calcium intake also was not associated with CVD death in men or women.

"Whether there is a sex difference in the cardiovascular effect of calcium supplement warrants further investigation. Given the extensive use of calcium supplement in the population, it is of great importance to assess the effect of supplemental calcium use beyond bone health," the authors conclude.

Eating more red meat associated with increased risk of Type 2 diabetes


Eating more red meat over time is associated with an increased risk of type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in a follow-up of three studies of about 149,000 U.S. men and women, according to a report published Online First by JAMA Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Red meat consumption has been consistently related to an increased risk of T2DM, but previous studies measured red meat consumption at a baseline with limited follow-up information. However, a persons eating behavior changes over time and measurement of consumption at a single point in time does not capture the variability of intake during follow-up, the authors note in the study background.

An Pan, Ph.D., of the National University of Singapore, and colleagues analyzed data from three Harvard group studies and followed up 26,357 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study; 48,709 women in the Nurses Health Study; and 74,077 women in the Nurses Health Study II. Diets were assessed using food frequency questionnaires.

During more than 1.9 million person-years of follow-up, researchers documented 7,540 incident cases of T2DM.

"Increasing red meat intake during a four-year interval was associated with an elevated risk of T2DM during the subsequent four years in each cohort," according to the study.

The results indicate that compared with a group with no change in red meat intake, increasing red meat intake of more than 0.50 servings per day was associated with a 48 percent elevated risk in the subsequent four-year period. Reducing red meat consumption by more than 0.50 servings per day from baseline to the first four years of follow-up was associated with a 14 percent lower risk during the subsequent entire follow-up.

The authors note the study is observational so causality cannot be inferred.

"Our results confirm the robustness of the association between red meat and T2DM and add further evidence that limiting red meat consumption over time confers benefits for T2DM prevention," the authors conclude.

Commentary: Oxygen-Carrying Proteins in Meat and Risk of Diabetes Mellitus

In an invited commentary, William J. Evans, Ph.D., of GlaxoSmithKline and Duke University, Durham, N.C., writes: "The article by Pan et al confirms previous observations that the consumption of so-called red meat is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)."
